In 2022, Martin Margiela held his first solo exhibition since his departure from the fashion world in 2009 at Lafayette Anticipations, a contemporary arts foundation located in the Marais district of Paris. The show, which ran from October 20, 2021, to January 2, 2022, invited visitors to explore Margiela’s work beyond the fashion world.

The exhibition featured over twenty works, including installations, sculptures, collages, paintings, and films. Margiela, internationally renowned as a fashion designer since the late 1980s, deliberately challenged fashion conventions throughout his career. His runway shows, materials, and forms became conceptual and aesthetic revolutions. At Lafayette Anticipations, he continued this obsession with transformation, creating a total artwork that defied traditional boundaries.

Visitors entered the exhibition through an emergency exit, immersing themselves in a labyrinthine show where works appeared and disappeared along the way. Margiela worked with multiple media, valuing references from a Caravaggio painting to a box of hair dye. The exhibition explored themes of existence, disappearance, and vulnerability. Margiela celebrated beauty in the fragile and fleeting, challenging dominant values.

Curated by Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel, the exhibition provided a fresh perspective on Margiela, emphasizing his artistic vision. Lafayette Anticipations allowed Margiela to transform its spaces, showcasing his multidisciplinary creativity.
