Born in Fukushima, Japan, in 1961, Junya Watanabe studied at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo, where he honed his skills and developed his unique design sensibility. After graduating, Watanabe began his career as a patternmaker at Comme des Garçons under the guidance of Rei Kawakubo. In 1992, he launched his eponymous label as part of the Comme des Garçons family, quickly gaining recognition for his innovative and avant-garde designs. Watanabe's collections are characterized by their experimental construction techniques, juxtaposition of textures and materials, and bold reinterpretation of classic garments. He is renowned for his masterful tailoring and ability to push the boundaries of traditional fashion, often incorporating elements of deconstruction, utility, and technology into his creations.
