ISSEY MIYAKE

Born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1938, Miyake studied graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo before moving to Paris in 1965 to further his fashion education. Upon returning to Japan, he founded the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo in 1970, where he began experimenting with unconventional materials and innovative garment construction techniques. Miyake's groundbreaking designs, characterized by their avant-garde silhouettes, geometric shapes, and intricate pleating, challenged traditional notions of fashion and earned him international acclaim. In 1983, he launched his iconic Pleats Please line, featuring garments made from permanently pleated fabric that revolutionized the way clothing could be worn and stored.
