Did this Margiela collection fall flat or was it just the clothes? In SS 2011, Maison Martin Margiela was without an official lead designer after the departure of Martin in 2009 and before the appointment of John Galliano in 2014.
The collection was a “Man’s wardrobe meeting the woman’s body” according to the show notes, with seemingly ordinary office wear transformed with squared backs and flat cuts which sat atop pants whose hems were glued to the heels of leather pumps.
Taking inspiration from the iconic “flat” collection of SS 1998, SS 2011 was a first look at the future of the house without its founder.
