In SS 1996, Martin Margiela revealed ‘Line 6’ with a tag exclusive to the early years of the collection. Flaunting a printed ‘6’ at the front and ‘Martin Margiela’ at the back, the tag strayed away from the classic four stitches that the Maison had become famous for, opting for a single stitched line across the top of the tag.
The SS 1996 collection notably featured screen-printed faux textures onto almost every garment, a technique known as troupe l’oeil (French for “trick of the eye”). Margiela was among the first to elevate screen-printed garments to the runway.
