Martin Margiela’s FW 2002 collection helped to further canonize the way that Martin redefined luxury.

Held in an abandoned church in Paris, men in white lab coats carried plexiglass boxes which enclosed vintage handbags wrapped in white cloth. This echoed the Maison’s codes of anonymity, but also took a radical stance against the current state of luxury by evoking it through second-hand pieces.

The most recognizable garments of the collection were fur, first appearing in FW 1997 as surrealistic fur wigs and now as full length coats with vintage tags to echo their origin.

By critiquing Parisian fashion while simultaneously being accepted and praised by the industry, Martin further developed his criticism and allure with this collection.
