Richard Serra (1938–2024) was an influential American artist known for his large-scale abstract sculptures. His work is primarily associated with Post-minimalism and often created for site-specific landscape, urban, and architectural settings. Serra’s sculptures are monumental, imposing, and provoke a visceral response from viewers.
Serra’s artistic journey was marked by intellectual challenges. He often had to forge the steel himself because factories couldn’t achieve the tolerances he demanded. His sculptures compel us to consider the forces of gravity that hold forms together in our surroundings. His legacy extends beyond his art; he was known for his intense focus, restless mind, and insistence on pushing boundaries.
Serra experimented with video in the early 1970s and produced numerous short films. His significant steel sculptures were manufactured in German steelworks, leading him to refer to the Ruhr industrial area as his "true studio”.
