Ann Demeulemeester, a prominent figure among the Antwerp Six, had already carved out a niche in the fashion industry with over a decade of experience when she unveiled her Spring 1997 collection. The runway show, set to the evocative tunes of Patti Smith, was a defining moment in her career. Her collection was a celebration of androgyny, asymmetry, and a certain degree of disarray, which was a refreshing departure from the prevailing trends of the time, with the overt sensuality of Tom Ford’s Gucci, and the sleek minimalism of Prada, Calvin Klein, and Helmut Lang.

The success of her Spring 1997 show was not just a personal victory for Demeulemeester; it was a triumph for diversity and individuality in fashion. It proved that there was room for different voices and visions in the industry, paving the way for other designers to break away from the mainstream and explore their unique perspectives.

In this rare interview from 1997 with CNN Style, Demeulemeester gives unique insights into her design process and interest in asymmetrical garments. CNN Style was a global fashion and design program hosted by Elsa Klensch from 1980 to 2001. Klensch, an Australian-born journalist, joined CNN in 1980 and her show was influential in providing a glimpse into the elusive runways of Paris and Milan to the general public.
