Drawing on the visual language of the Alexander McQueen A/W 98 Joan collection, Nick Knight's editorial for the April 1998 issue of TheFace featured Shirley Mallmann on a bed of nails and Lee McQueen himself channeling Joan of Arc. As always, Knight recorded the entire shoot for his archive using handycams. Footage from the shoot was never released and remained in Knight's archive until now.The 7 page feature titled "McQueen is dead: Long live Alexander McQueen" includes a fold out 'poster', and a full page reproduc-tion of the letter written by McQueen to The Face, explaining the image he created with Nick Knight. This is his hand-written response:
“Joan, Deep inside of me I have no regrets of the way i portray myself to the General Public. I will face fear head on if necessary but would run from a fight if persuaded. The fire in my soul is for the love of one Man but I do not forget my women whom I adore as they burn daily from Cheshire to Lancester”.
