Stamped in 2003, this Hermès Birkin 35 belongs to the final year of Martin Margiela’s tenure at the maison. Although the Birkin itself sits within Hermès’s longer leather-goods lineage, this example emerges from a period defined by Margiela’s restrained and sophisticated reinterpretation of luxury for the house. Adding further context, Jane Birkin herself, the bag’s namesake, appeared in Hermès’s Spring 2000 runway presentation during Margiela’s tenure. Crafted in black Togo leather, a grained calfskin introduced in 1997 and known for its matte finish, durability, and relatively supple structure, it is rendered in one of the materials most closely associated with the Birkin. Its 35 cm format preserves one of Hermès’s classic larger proportions.
