HISTORY
From Junya Watanabe’s Fall/Winter 1996 collection for Comme des Garçons, this skirt is an early example of the designer’s techno-couture period, where surface manipulation and material experimentation took precedence over traditional luxury fabrication. Often misattributed as leather due to its distressed, cracked appearance, the piece is in fact constructed from synthetic and textile materials engineered to visually mimic treated hide. The bleached front panel contrasts with a darker, irregularly textured reverse, underscoring Watanabe’s interest in trompe-l’œil effects and industrial aging processes during the mid-1990s.
