Yohji Yamamoto’s Spring/Summer 2012 menswear collection blurred boundaries with a genre-bending take on cultural codes. Japanese Hakama trousers met Napoleon-era jackets and cowboy chaps, all topped with austere Amish hats—refracted through a distinctly Yohji lens. This wasn’t fusion for spectacle, but a meditation on silhouette, ritual, and rebellion.
Departing from his signature black, the palette pulsed with azure, crimson, forest green, and cobalt—colors that brought new charge to the flowing, fragmented forms. Patchwork paneling—an ode to Picasso’s Cubist impulse and a motif Yohji had explored since AW91—fractured the garments into wearable abstractions. As always, the line between clothing and composition collapsed.
